About This Work
Painted during one of Melbourne's lockdowns while watching The Queen's Gambit, this work represents a time in which many of us found comfort in routines, games and familiar patterns. This painting came from the simple pleasure of seeing what happens when the familiar layout of a chess board is altered through colour to form a different pattern and rhythm. I wasn’t trying to depict the game itself, but as chess is governed by a set of rules, I wanted to apply my own set of rules to this painting.
